THE CHOSEN by Chiam Potok

Chosen

The development of the friendship shared between Reuven Malter and Danny Saunders is fascinating in light of their familial and cultural differences within the Judaic faith. Though an unlikely match for friendship, by the end of the book, it is easy to forget the circumstances from which their friendship was conceived.

Their story allows us to join the characters and explore the depths of friendship in light of painful opposition. Devotion to faith and passion for one’s cultural heritage serve both as a bonding force as well as a wedge between the two friends (and their fathers). Together, they learn how to expand their intellect and develop their faith in light of cognitive dissonance.
