In a world full of rash reactions to fear and violence, reading the story of Malala was both inspiring and refreshing. Though horrified and bewildered at the level of cowardice and blind ignorance demonstrated by so many individuals in  her story, hope still managed to take root in my heart as I read about the bravery of Malala, her family, and her friends.

It can often be so immensely disheartening to witness entire communities swept up in blatant manipulation by power-hungry forces, especially when done in the name of “faith”. We see this everywhere, not just Central Asia, the Middle East, or various 3rd World communities. It can be seen in our own neighborhoods. Some seem to recognize what is taking place but are too afraid to oppose. Some are stricken with apathy because they feel that nothing will change no matter how hard anyone tries.Others are simply unaware because they lack the capacity to think for themselves. So many are hungry for leaders in whom they can trust but are unable to determine trustworthiness in others.

And then there are still others who not only recognize the evil at work but also dedicate their lives to exposing said evil and fighting against it.

I have always striven to be in the latter category, and reading Malala’s story has only reinforced this resolve. Furthermore, I want to play a role in removing the scales from others’ eyes in order to empower them to see and determine for themselves how they will be led. Leaders can only be held accountable by those who possess enough understanding and courage to stand up and offer critique. Imposing ignorance on a community is probably the most effective weapon by which leaders can maintain and freely wield power.

Reflecting on my own formative journeys, much of my personal development has been a direct result of choosing to challenge myself through reading. Exploring the thoughts of others through their written words can unleash one’s ability to stretch beyond one’s personal perspectives in such a way that can lead to greater awareness and enlightenment. The more one is able to explore literature, the more one is able to unlock new thoughts. As one expands his or her arsenal of language, understanding and perspective will also expand. Furthermore, one’s understanding and perspective can only grow as much as one’s language will allow.

I am grateful that Malala’s story has achieved such publicity, and I pray that her story will continue to inspire us to reach for greater understanding and likewise stand in opposition to those who would restrict others’ ability to increase their own understanding.
