I so appreciate the candid approach that Hauerwas chose in writing this book. Reading accounts from his life reminded me that a person becomes who he or she is, not because of one defining event, but from a myriad of events and decisions throughout one’s lifetime.

I have heard it said that theologians are in danger of living in the clouds and losing sight of what it truly means to love and be loved by their Creator and the people around them. I have heard that they become so consumed with learning about God and about how to live a Christian life that they often neglect actually knowing God and living out their own Christian life. But Hauerwas’s life reveals that this does not have to be the case. One can simultaneously grow intellectually and relationally. In this book, Hauerwas beautifully demonstrates how God often uses relationships to reveal His character to us. His life thus far affirms the transformative work that God’s love can do in people.

All in all, each time I closed the book, I found myself encouraged and full of hope.
